Birdie Marie Cherico grew up in Austin with her parents John and Ida (Frey) Cherico and 3 siblings. Birdie was born on August 26, 1907, graduated from John T. Allan junior high school on June 1, 1922 and from Austin Public High School in January of 1925. Upon her high school graduation she was awarded a Board of Regents scholarship in 1925 that entitled her to an exemption from the matriculation fee at the University of Texas.
